In February 1962, Sydney?s skyline began to take shape, with the opening of what was, at the time, Australia?s tallest building ? the 25 storey AMP Tower. With the first hydrofoil ferry service beginning operations in January 1965, the face of modern Sydney was really beginning to take shape, just around the time the Beatles were finishing their tour of the country, bringing the first taste of the real sixties scene to these shores.

Australia?s entry into the war with Vietnam was announced in June of 1965. In 1966 as the war was raging and conscripted Sydney-siders were being flown out, Prime Minister for 16 years Sir Robert Menzies was being succeeded by Harold Holt. However when Holt went swimming in heavy surf near Melbourne in December 1967 he never returned, and his body was never recovered. Therefore power changed hands yet again, with John Grey Gorton being sworn in as Australia?s 19th Prime Minister.

A time of political upheaval then, and a country at war both with a foreign power and in many ways, with itself, as pacifists and political activists staged protests and battled hard to have their feelings on the war heard.
